Scholarships and grants

Two types of scholarships and grants are awarded each year.

1.  Those administered by other charitable organisations and trusts within the disability sector: these are listed below.

2.  Those administered by The National Foundation for the Deaf Inc., on behalf of The NFD Trust: view these scholarships.

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) - Sign Language Interpreting Scholarships

Purpose:

To support students who wish to become qualified New Zealand Sign Language Interpreters

Amount:

$3,000

Eligibility criteria:

Applicants must:

•  be accepted into and intend to complete The Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting and register as a qualified Sign Language Interpreter in NZ
•  demonstrate a basic level of NZSL competency
•  exhibit academic competency
•  be of good moral character and repute

Blue Lagoon Hearing Trust Scholarship

Purpose:

To benefit deaf or hard of hearing people in the Tauranga and Mt Maunganui areas.

Amount:

$5000

Eligibility criteria:

Applicants can be adults, youth, hard of hearing, deaf or hearing individuals and must be a New Zealand permanent resident. Preference will be given to applicants that live in the Tauranga/Mt Maunganui area and their study must benefit the deaf and/or hard of hearing community.

Closing date:

31 October annually

Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand - Shirley McKenzie Scholarship

Purpose:

To support Deaf people to get training, mainly in areas that will contribute in some way to the welfare, education or well being of other Deaf people.

Amount:

Deaf Decade Trust - Deaf Studies Award

Purpose:

To support deaf students undertaking the Deaf Studies course at Victoria University of Wellington

Amount:

$2,000

Eligibility criteria:

Deaf permanent residents of New Zealand who have been accepted for the Certificate in Deaf Studies at VUW

Closing date:

1 December annually

Deaf Decade Trust - Sir Roy McKenzie Scholarship

Purpose:

To support deaf and hard of hearing students with tertiary studies at Victoria University of Wellington

Amount:

$3,000 undergraduates, $5,000 post-graduates

Eligibility criteria:

Hearing loss of 70db or greater

Closing date:

30 November annually

Deaf Decade Trust - Penny Went NZSL Teaching Scholarship

Purpose:

To encourage Deaf people to study New Zealand Sign Language teaching at a tertiary institution.  The course should preferably be a degree, and must be above the level of 'Certificate in Deaf Studies: Teaching NZSL' (VUW)

Amount:

(up to) $5,000

Eligibility criteria:

Deaf, fluent in NZSL, member of the NZ Sign Language Teachers' Association, teaching experience, most preferably in NZSL

Closing date:

1 November annually

Deaf Decade Trust - Deaf Development Fund

Purpose:

To support projects and endeavours that contribute to the development of the Deaf community

Amount:

Eligibility criteria:

Must have benefit to the Deaf community

Closing date:

Six weeks prior to the applicant's project's start date.

Deafness Research Foundation - Project, Travel & PhD Grants

Purpose:

To encourage and support students with project research, travel costs and PhD studies in deafness research

Dennis Nathan Educational Trust

Purpose:

To assist people born deaf who are over 16 years of age to gain educational, trade or other work training skills.  Includes the cost of fees, books, tools and similar training expenses.

Gemini Trust - Disability Scholarships

Purpose:

To support students who have completed at least one year of University study and whose home is in the Waikato, King Country or Coromandel regions

Have a physical disability and are based in the Waikato, King Country or Coromandel regions

Kelston Deaf Education Centre - Mary Adeline Allen Scholarship

Purpose:

To assist with course costs at recognised post-secondary educational institutions

Purpose:

Must be deaf or hard of hearing students up to 22 years of age

Open Polytechnic of NZ - Shona Butterfield Scholarship

Purpose:

To support students who have a disability that impacts on their ability to study

Amount:

(up to) $5,000

Eligibility criteria:

Must be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand

Closing date:

10 January annually

Open Polytechnic of NZ - Disability Study Awards

Purpose:

To support students who have a disability that impacts on their ability to study

Amount:

(up to) $1,000

Eligibility criteria

Must be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand and successfully completed a previous year's study.

Closing date:

30 April annually

Otatara Trust (EIT Hawkes Bay) - John Harre Award

Purpose:

For EIT past or present students (Hawkes Bay campus only) with a disability who are in transition from study to full-time employment

Applicants must be nationals of and work in Australia, New Zealand or Fiji

University of Auckland - Dulcie Bowman Memorial Scholarship

Purpose:

To assist 2nd year (or subsequent years) female students who have a hearing loss, with their studies at the University of Auckland

$3,000 (2 awarded only each year)
