Deafness Research Foundation

The Deafness Research Foundation focuses on supporting research into hearing and deafness in New Zealand.  We now fund research at centres throughout the country through a range of scholarships and grants.  We receive no government funding.

The foundation was established in 1963.  We are the only charity in New Zealand that focuses on research into deafness.

What We Do

The Deafness Research Foundation is involved in three major activities.

1. Research

Our top priority is encouraging and supporting original research.  With our support, many researchers have made significant contributions to international knowledge about hearing and deafness.  Clinicians and other health workers draw on this knowledge base to provide the best care for deaf and hearing impaired people.

2. Sharing Knowledge and Training

The Deafness Research Foundation helps local experts to visit overseas laboratories and conferences, and encourages overseas experts to visit New Zealand.  This helps us to keep up with and evaluate new developments that may be useful in this country.

3. Implementing Research Results

New developments in research need to be adapted for the New Zealand setting before being implemented.   We help by identifying local needs and assessing social, cultural and physical environments.   That way, new developments can be introduced in an suitable and cost-effective way that benefits all New Zealanders.
