Project HIEDI was established in 2002 to advocate for the introduction of a high quality newborn hearing screening and early intervention programme in New Zealand.
In May 2006, the government announced that it would fund a newborn hearing screening programme for all New Zealand children. By the end of June 2010 all 20 district health boards were screening babies for hearing loss.
The NFD began supporting Project HIEDI team members’ work towards this goal in 2002.
Now that a national screening programme is underway, our focus is on ensuring that the screening and early intervention programme is implemented effectively and is of the highest quality.
