Non-NFD Scholarships & Grants

Many New Zealand organisations offer funding for deaf and hearing impaired people, and people who work in hearing-related areas.

You can download an information sheet (see end of this page) which summarises facts about the major scholarships and grants. Or you can find out more by exploring the options below.

We strongly recommend you contact the organisations directly to check current eligibility criteria and closing dates.

Deafness Research Foundation Grants & Scholarships

The Deafness Research Foundation offers three types of funding – travel grants, project grants and an annual PhD scholarship. Applications for project grants and the PhD scholarship close at the end of June each year. Applications for travel grants are accepted throughout the year.

AUT Community Partnership Award Scholarship for the Deaf

Scholarship which pays tuition fees of a deaf or hearing impaired student at Auckland University of Technology for up to three years.

Blue Lagoon Charitable Trust Scholarship

An annual scholarship of $5,000 for study that will benefit deaf or hearing impaired people in the Tauranga/Mt Maunganui area. Applications close 31 October.

Deaf Studies Award

Available to deaf people participating in Deaf Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. Applications close 1 December.

Dulcie Bowman Memorial Scholarship

Available to hearing impaired women students enrolled at the University of Auckland in their second or subsequent year of study. Two application dates – 30 June and 1 November.

M G Martin Charitable Trust

Contributes to the costs of attending a conference or course, or doing a research project on the education of deaf and hearing impaired children. Applications close 31 October.

Mary Adeline Allen Scholarship

Available to deaf or hearing impaired secondary students. Applications close on 31 October each year.

NZFDC Advanced Learning Scholarship (includes the Rose Scholarship)

Available to deaf post-secondary students. Applications close on 1 March each year

Quota International Scholarships & Sheila Drummond Bursary

To help people pursuing careers in the fields of speech and hearing. Applications close 1 March.

Quota International of Takapuna Scholarship for Deaf People

Available to deaf tertiary students based in Auckland. Applications close 31 March.

Shirley McKenzie Scholarship

Available to deaf applicants, for training that will benefit the welfare, education or well being of other deaf people. Applications close 31 January.

Sign Language Interpreting Scholarships

These scholarships aim to support students who wish to become qualified New Zealand Sign Language Interpreters. Applications close 31 January.

Sir Roy McKenzie Deaf Scholarship

To encourage and enable more deaf students to achieve a tertiary qualification by studying at Victoria University of Wellington. Applications close 30 November.
