The NFD (National Foundation for the Deaf) is an incorporated society with six member groups. Together, we support the interests of nearly half a million deaf and hearing impaired New Zealanders.
Much of our work revolves around identifying and dealing with issues that affect people with hearing impairment.
So we may be involved in lobbying government for changes in legislation. Or researching new ways to help people with hearing loss. Often we work in partnership with one or more of our member groups. For instance, we supported the steering group that prepared the case for universal newborn hearing screening in New Zealand. Learn more
We also provide financial support through the NFD Trust, to individuals and groups that meet our criteria.
Equally important is our work in the wider community to raise awareness of hearing preservation. We encourage everyone to appreciate the joy of hearing and to preserve their hearing. So we strongly support the NZ Acoustical Society′s project to rate noise levels in cafés and restaurants. Learn more
